A little about me
Dr. Amy Young
The look on someone's face when the pain they walked in with has let go is the reason I still love this work. Twenty years in, I'm more interested in the next twenty than I was in the first.
I graduated from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in 2002, worked briefly in Australia, and in 2004 co-founded a multidisciplinary clinic in Scarborough. I'm now at the south end of Liverpool Road, in the Nautical Village by the lake — with walking paths outside the front door, which suits the way I practise more than any address I've had.
I take my time with each patient, listening for the clues that lead to the root cause rather than the sore spot — including the parts that don't hurt, because they are often where the answer is. Working on my own means you see me every visit, and I remember what we tried last time without reading it off a screen.
I use chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue therapy, acupuncture, ultrasound and CranioSacral therapy, and I fit custom orthotics where they're needed. The stretching and strengthening I prescribe comes out of an undergraduate degree in physical education and my own yoga practice. Which of it you get is my decision to make, not yours to research.
What a first visit is like
It is eighty minutes — roughly double what most clinics book — and there is a gap after it, so nobody gets hurried out to make room for the next person.
- You tell me the historyI ask a lot of questions — when it started, what makes it worse, what you've already tried, what you've stopped doing because of it.
- I watch how you move and examine the areaIncluding the joints above and below the sore one, and the parts that feel fine.
- We usually start treatment the same visitIn eighty minutes there is nearly always enough left to begin.
- You leave knowing what I think and what I'd like to doA few visits close together, then we reassess. No packages, no booking you in for three months.
